Boston, Plymouth & Sandwich Mail Stagecoach

This 1810 hand-colored lithograph in the Sandwich Historical Society collections advertised the Boston, Plymouth & Sandwich Mail Stage, a stagecoach route linking Sandwich to Boston and other communities along the South Shore. Operated by Leonard & Woodward, the service ran multiple times each week, carrying passengers, news, letters, and goods across southeastern Massachusetts.

Before railroads and automobiles, stage lines like this were essential infrastructure. They connected towns to regional markets, political centers, and postal networks, helping to knit together the young republic in the decades after the American Revolution.

The route shows how improvements in transportation and communication were increasingly connecting Sandwich to the wider region in the early republic. Printed just over a generation after independence, this broadside reflects a nation in motion—one where improved roads, regular mail service, and faster travel were reshaping everyday life.
